- Making Inferences Worksheet - I use this little gem with my struggling readers when introducing the concept of "reading between the lines". For whatever reason struggling readers have a difficult time using evidence in text and their own background knowledge to make educated guesses and answer the who, what, when, where, why and how questions. This particular worksheet takes less than 30 minutes to complete and is super easy. When I introduced this concept it seemed overwhelming to my struggling readers, until I brought this out, giving them success, which in turn gave them confidence.
We started out doing the first two together, then they did one with a partner, and the last two on their own. By the end, they had it down and were ready to move to more complicated text. - Horror Stories for Halloween [Edgar Allan Poe Study] - Students will use context clues to determine meaning of words, identify and apply knowledge of literary devices and analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning using works of Edgar Allan Poe (The Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven). This 4 day unit is designed using the 4MAT model where students connect, attend, imagine, inform, practice, extend, refine, and perform. Be prepared to be creeped out and learn how to analyze Poe's stories and poems to better understand just how creepy and sad he intended them to be!
- Literary Analysis (How to Write About Literature) This unit follows the 4MAT method where students connect, reflect, gather information, research, experiment, practice, and perform in order to master the ability to think critically about literature and then follow a specific writing formula to demonstrate understanding of their analysis.
